Sep. 6—Helena's new budget is up 3.6 mills compared to last year, which will add to homeowner's property taxes by around $4.86 per $100,000 in value.
The 3.6 mills are part of four major levies, totaling 152.37 mills: the general levy at 110.43, the permissive health levy at 25.99, the GO debt (which helped pay for park improvements) levy at 5.52 and the fire supplemental levy at 10.43.
The permissive health levy took a roughly 1.5-mill cut this year after city employee health insurance premiums were adjusted, Finance Director Sheila Danielson told the City Commission on Aug. 26.
The GO debt levy could be shrunk after other funds helped pay off debts, and the general and fire supplemental levies needed to be raised after inflation outpaced Helena's taxable property growth, Danielson said.
The changes will add $4.86 in property taxes per $100,000 of value. That adds up to $14.58 for homes valued at $300,000 and $29.16 for homes valued at $600,000.
